Breaking Free: Triumphing Over Abuse

Woman and children walking free, title text included

I want to share some honest advice based on my own experiences of being in a harmful environment. I tried to leave my situation eighteen times before I really understood how dangerous it was to stay. It’s important to realize that leaving can be very risky, and you can never be sure what will happen.

With a heavy heart and a sense of regret, I’ve made it my mission to help others in similar circumstances. Now that I’ve walked this path and learned from it, I hope to reach those in need through my words.

If you find yourself in a situation where leaving is vital, please remember to take only your identification, credit cards, and whatever cash you can manage. It’s crucial to seize the opportunity to escape when it’s available—material possessions can be replaced, but your life and your children’s lives cannot. Your strength is their anchor, so take that important step forward and don’t look back.

Lean on the support of friends, family, and neighbours during this challenging time. If necessary, consider going into hiding; there’s no shame in protecting yourself and your children. Many organizations, along with law enforcement, are out there to help women and children facing abuse—I have leaned on these resources myself with my children many years ago, and they made a difference.

Please don’t go back to your abuser. I did, and I still carry the weight of that regret. After many attempts, I finally managed to break free for good, but I recognize that not everyone may have that same opportunity.

It’s crucial to understand that the effects of abuse extend far beyond you; they deeply affect your children as well. If you’re thinking about returning to an abusive situation, remember that it puts your safety at risk and can inflict lasting emotional and mental scars on your kids. Even without physical harm, the fear and anxiety they experience can hinder their growth and development.

Always prioritize your children’s well-being; they deserve a nurturing, secure environment free from fear and chaos. Your courage to choose safety and stability matters—it’s a gift you can give them as they grow.

Relax - Take a Break

My name is Patricia Young, and I am 72 years old. I am here to share my journey and to help others who have faced the challenging path of domestic abuse. While I may not have experienced much severe physical harm, the emotional and mental scars I carry are profound. Yet, I have discovered a strength and resilience within me that I never knew existed. I want to reach out to women in their later years: you are not alone on this journey. It is absolutely possible to reclaim your strength, recognize your worth, and rise above the pain of abuse. Our past does not define us; we have the power to rewrite our stories and lift each other as we move forward. Together, we can stand strong, support one another, and break the silence surrounding these painful experiences. Remember, our voices matter, and it's never too late to seek help and start anew. You deserve love, respect, and a brighter future.
