Many women in shelters understand the difficult experience of leaving an abusive relationship and sometimes returning. It’s not a sign of weakness; often, it’s a hopeful belief that things can improve. Moments of apology or calm can make it seem like change is possible. However, it’s important to recognize that abuse tends to follow a troubling pattern, and returning can often make things harder.

Those happy moments can feel real, but they often don’t change the bigger issues. This cycle affects not only women but also children, who may feel scared and confused, impacting their sense of safety and understanding of healthy relationships.

Leaving isn’t a failure; it’s a courageous step toward safety and healing. If you are reading this, take a moment to recognize your bravery. Choosing to seek a better life is a powerful decision.

You are not alone in this journey—there’s no judgment here, just support and understanding. Surrounding you are women who have faced similar challenges and are ready to support you as you move forward.

Together, we can create a strong community where we lift each other up. We can build brighter futures for ourselves and the children who deserve safety and happiness. Your journey is just beginning, and there is always hope ahead.

Relax - Take a Break

My name is Patricia Young, and I am 72 years old. I am here to share my journey and to help others who have faced the challenging path of domestic abuse. While I may not have experienced much severe physical harm, the emotional and mental scars I carry are profound. Yet, I have discovered a strength and resilience within me that I never knew existed. I want to reach out to women in their later years: you are not alone on this journey. It is absolutely possible to reclaim your strength, recognize your worth, and rise above the pain of abuse. Our past does not define us; we have the power to rewrite our stories and lift each other as we move forward. Together, we can stand strong, support one another, and break the silence surrounding these painful experiences. Remember, our voices matter, and it's never too late to seek help and start anew. You deserve love, respect, and a brighter future.
