Psalm 23 — A Shepherd Who Stays Close

Open Bible displaying Psalm 23: “The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he lead me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.”
An open, timeworn Bible displays Psalm 23 beside a resting hand in a warmly lit room.

Psalm 23 gives us a peaceful picture of God. It shows Him as a gentle Shepherd who stays close to us. He is not harsh or distant. He walks with us, guides us, and protects us, especially when life feels heavy or confusing.

“The Lord is my shepherd; I lack nothing.”

These words remind us that God cares for us with deep kindness. He knows when we are tired and leads us to places of rest. He brings quiet to our hearts when everything around us feels loud. He refreshes us in ways we may not notice at first, but we feel the calm slowly returning.

Even when we walk through dark or painful valleys — places we never wanted to be — God does not leave us. He stays close. His presence comforts us. His guidance steadies us. His protection gives us courage to keep going.

The rod and staff in this Psalm are not tools of punishment. They are signs of safety. They show us that God knows how to guide us and how to guard us. His care is gentle, steady, and always present.

Psalm 23 reminds us of this simple truth:

You are not walking alone. God is with you, and He will stay with you.

Closing Prayer

God, I lift every person reading this today. You know their worries, their hurts, and the places where they long for peace. Meet them gently. Let Your presence feel like calm water and soft green pastures.

Walk with them through every valley. Steady their steps when fear rises. Hold them close when life feels overwhelming. Let Your rod and staff be their comfort and safety.

Refresh their soul. Restore what has grown tired. Surround them with Your goodness and Your unfailing love, today and every day.

God, be their Shepherd. Be their peace. Be their steady place to rest.

Amen.

Relax - Take a Break

My name is Patricia Young, and I am 72 years old. I am here to share my journey and to help others who have faced the challenging path of domestic abuse. While I may not have experienced much severe physical harm, the emotional and mental scars I carry are profound. Yet, I have discovered a strength and resilience within me that I never knew existed. I want to reach out to women in their later years: you are not alone on this journey. It is absolutely possible to reclaim your strength, recognize your worth, and rise above the pain of abuse. Our past does not define us; we have the power to rewrite our stories and lift each other as we move forward. Together, we can stand strong, support one another, and break the silence surrounding these painful experiences. Remember, our voices matter, and it's never too late to seek help and start anew. You deserve love, respect, and a brighter future.
